Increasing Student-Centred Supports and Services

If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that Ontario’s students, educators and families are resilient. Despite unfamiliar models of learning, students have forged ahead with their studies and educators have adapted to find the flexibility to meet their needs. While unpredictability has characterized the past 18 months, the next 18 months, and even 18 years, must be grounded in the understanding that our kids need stable and permanent funding mechanisms in place so they can succeed and thrive.

What’s This About?

Providing permanent, predictable, and meaningful funding for specialized programming and supports for all students strengthens learner outcomes and translates into increased graduation rates and student opportunity and success. Equity objectives are met best when funding is accessible and widespread. Having more staff in buildings creates safer school buildings and campuses, promotes student and worker mental health, and healthy communities.

How do we address these issues?

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation's (OSSTF/FEESO) Strengthen Public Education–Rebuild Ontario plan is a vision for how we can protect and buildup Ontario's publicly-funded education system. Take a look below at some the key issues affecting our students that must be addressed moving forward.

Staffing Models That Support Student and Worker Opportunities for Success

  • A standard formula for worker staff/student ratios for education workers in publicly-funded education sites is required.

  • All supports must be culturally relevant and workers need to be provided with training opportunities on the harms of colonialism.
